The times they are a changing

Les Alyscamps: Falling Autumn Leaves by Vincent Van Gough

As our studio on Blyth and Nicholson St has been sold we will be relocating to a new space for upcoming Art Classes. Today's Class on the 28th of February will go ahead as usual.
However the following week we will be relocating and I am off to GOMA in Brisbane to see Cai Gup-Qiang's show woo hoo! So there will be NO class on Friday the 7th of March. I will let you know where the new place is as soon as I confirm it. I just wanted to give you a heads up so you can plan the next two weeks if you need. Come along today for our last Art Class in Smiley McSlidey studio, but not our last class ever of course. We will be looking at the colours of Autumn, hope to see you there!!

paper kings

I have recently found two very impressive paper artists using mundane materials to make something exceptional.
I love this beautifully expressive craft paper sculptures by Ivar Theorin.

and can't believe this 1/60th scale model of an Air India 777 Passenger plane made by Luca Laoni-Stewart out of manila folders, yes manila folders, it took 10 000 hours to complete... amazing.

isobel knowles

In the distant past, when I was a complete luddite and decided a degree in digital fine art was the thing for me, it turned out I hadn't thought a few things through.
Somehow I had completely missed the computer revolution and entered the university not even knowing where the on button was on the computer. Seriously. Lucky for me I quickly made friends with a young woman who was very gifted with computers and also animation. She quietly got me up to speed and opened up the world of technology. All these years later Isobel Knowles is still cranking out amazing work. Here is her latest video for Sally Seltmann, for the song "Catch of the Day"...just beautiful.

I always loved this animation of hers from way back from 2001 called At Play Time

and while I was looking through her archive I saw this little one which I may or may not have been a character reference for.... I know, if only I looked that good!

Isobel often collaborates with all sorts of other clever people and here is a beautiful children's book, Owl Know How she made with Cat Rabbit. You can find it here

abstract ice sculpture

On Friday in our Art and Science class we explored the way the melting properties of ice is affected by the introduction of a solute. It was fun messy and chaotic and is a great activity for the hot months of Summer.

2014 classes

Art-science-nature classes for children aged 1-5 years old will commence again this Friday the 7th of February at Smiley McSlidey studio.
Here is all the information you may need. I can't wait to see you all there and thanks for being patient with the delayed start date.

Time:
Classes are open ended and go from 10am-12pm. You can come and go at any stage during the two hours. All activities are designed to be engaging for 1-5 year olds and the differences between their attention spans and interests. You can stay for the whole two hours or come and make something fast in between tantrums.

Address:
124 Nicholson St East Brunswick on the corner of Blythe.

When:
Each Friday form 10 am -12pm

What happens:
Each week we will explore an aspect of science and nature through making something. Each guardian stays with their child and they share the experience together. Have a look at past posts for an idea of what we did last year.

Cost:
I have decided to raise my class price to better enable me to make the classes really great. This year the cost per child will be...

Per child -  $10.00
If you have two children of participating age -  $15.00

Concession price is
Per child -  $7.00.
If you have two children of participating age -  $10.00

and if you have a baby just bring them along for free of course.

I loved last years classes and can't wait to get started, see you on Friday or when ever you can make it along.
