I have been in a good book drought for months and then suddenly found three great ones in a row. My boyfriend passed Black Swan Green by David Mitchell and Cannery Row by Steinbeck on to me. I love Steinbeck but had never read this one it is brilliant of course. I am reading and loving Questions of Travel by Michelle de Kretser which I need to finish for my book group next week. I won't review them as I will not do them justice but if you like complex human stories about every day people all three are terrific.
Today will be our last Art Class for the term with the next two weeks being school holidays there will be no classes on.
We will be exploring shadow puppets and my niece and nephews will be coming along to help which will be terrific. Maybe if we concentrate they might come out something like these beautiful works by German animator extroidinaire Lottie Reiniger.
And speaking of sunflower seeds a friend of mine has shown me this amazing work by Ai Weiwei composed of 100 million hand carved and painted porcelain sunflower seeds. It was exhibited at the Tate Modern in 20010/2011. Can you imagine what that would have been like? Here is a documentary about him if you are interested I just finished watching it and it was really good.
A long time ago in another time and place a friend of mine called Walter Martin was in a great rock and roll band. He now also makes wonderful music for everybody, including children, to enjoy and in our house we are doing just that. I am waiting for four copies to arrive in the mail and will be handing them out so everyone near by can have a little bit of this sunshine in their life. You can have a free listen here.
